What is the American Board of Orthodontics?

The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) was founded in 1929. It is the oldest and most prestigious specialty board in dentistry. The ABO’s aim is to elevate the standards of the practice of orthodontics, to familiarize the public with its aim and ideals, and to protect the public against irresponsible and unqualified practitioners.

What is a board certified orthodontist?

To become board certified orthodontist, an orthodontist has to pass a rigorous set of written and clinical examinations, as well as a comprehensive review of credentials. The voluntary examination process and certification demonstrates the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence. Certification involves a thorough written examination covering all areas of information on which an orthodontist should be knowledgeable. Successful passage of the written examination allows the orthodontist to present nearly perfectly treated cases which will be evaluated by expert examiners of the Board during a Clinical Examination.

What is a Diplomate of ABO?

A Diplomate of the ABO who has been voluntarily examined by expert examiners on the basis of orthodontic knowledge and clinical skills. Becoming board certified signifies the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.
